Kiss-FM's program director, Barry Mayo, was a young African-American who experimented with hip-hop on the station. This proved that hip-hop could be a viable format for radio. However, the station's ratings took a dive when he began going off script. He played a lot of hip-hop tracks back to back.

After Mayo left, Kiss FM continued to play hip-hop, but switched to more classic RB. But in 2007, he joined Hot 97 and started experimenting with rap again.

Kiss FM is now owned by iHeartMedia. They acquired the brand name from the company that previously owned it. Although most of the KISS-FM stations in the United States are operated by iHeartMedia, some Kiss-branded stations are owned by Clear Channel.
